Mambilla: A killing too many

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed worries over the alarming level of insecurity of lives and property in the country which are clear signs of danger to Nigeria’s democracy and to National Security.

NUaj said it was particularly shocked by the killings of citizens, livestock and destruction of property allegedly by the Mambilla Sectarian Militia on the Mambilla Plateau of Sardauna Local Government of Taraba State from 17th to 23rd of June this year.

National Secretary, Shuauibu Usman Leman and Walin Shadalafiya said in a press release that what was more shocking was the revelation by the General Officer Commanding the Third Division of the Nigerian Army, Brig Gen Benjamin Ahanotu who was on the Mambilla  Plateau that the level of killings targeted at Fulani herdsmen was alarming and that while the mayhem lasted, some traditional and Community Leaders did nothing to stop the killings and neither did they make any efforts at assisting the wounded get any medical attention.

“Nigerians have watched with utmost regret and hopelessness similar killings allegedly by Fulani herdsmen in Plateau, Nasarawa and Benue States, in Southern parts of Kaduna State and elsewhere while those entrusted with the security of life and property of Nigerians watched without being able to bring any of the alleged perpetrators to account for their crimes,” the release read.

The Association further noted that it was pertinent to caution the Federal Government that allowing the insecurity level to reach such unacceptable dimension was capable of plunging this country into catastrophic irreversibility.

It is, therefore, imperative that we call on the Federal Government to move fast to avert another mayhem by quickly arresting the perpetrators of the killings in Mambilla and all the killings that took place earlier and bring the culprits to justice.
