Dentists Call Private Firms to Invest in Dentistry, Doctors

Rebecca Ejifoma
Foremost Dental Surgeon and CEO of Newcross Petroleum Limited, Dr. Bolaji Ogundare, has said for there to be a paradigm shift in the health sector in the country, private investors and the public must reinvest in the doctors and health teachers as Nigerians rely on them for healthcare services.

He gave this crayon call at the 11th Annual Faculty Conference and First Alumni Lecture held at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Lagos yesterday July 6, where renowned professors in dentistry, dentists, nurses and students participated.
“One of the things that has to happen is to reinvest in our health institutions. Many people have a lot of money but they are not spending it on their healthcare. They are busy building mansions. But when we fall sick, we expect these doctors who have not been invested in to treat us,” he added.

According to Ogundare, who is also the Managing Director of Newcross, Nigeria needs to encourage doctors to be motivated to do their job. “We need  look at how to develop the hospitals can be upgraded for people to go so that when they go they are sure they will be well-analysed. If you listen to the people, most of the people are discouraged. It’s discouraging when people say they have no jobs after graduating from the university.”

He expressed that  it was time for a paradigm shift; hence, the lecture is to motivate people to look differently from what  they do to rebuild the state of the country’s healthcare.

Meanwhile, Professor of Paediatric Dentistry and Dean of College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Prof. Obafunke Denloye, urged dentists – students and teachers – on a need to improve health services and delivery in the country.

“That means we all have to leave our comfort zones if we want to move forward. Levels have changed and things are no longer done the way they were done in our time. The real change begins with us,” she advised.
