The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with the National Orientation Agency (NAO) has begun campaign to promote and ensure every child in Kosofe Local Government is adequately protected against vaccine preventable diseases through immunisation and pregnant women use health centres for antenatal care and delivery.

The rally, which was to end vaccine resistance and enhance immunisation among children against various preventable diseases, had traditional leaders and various influential groups alongside residents in the LGA in attendance.

According UNICEF Immunisation Specialist, Dr Charles Nwosisi, children who have been  vaccinated are better protected from dangerous diseases including: pneumonia, influenza, tuberculosis, diphtheria, polio, measles, meningitis, whooping cough, yellow fever, tetanus and yellow fever.

He spoke further: “Ensure you complete your child’s immunisation schedule against these preventable diseases. Immunisation is safe, effective and free.”

“UNICEF is excited that Kosofe communities are owning the responsibility of ensuring that all her children are fully immunised and women make use of health facilities for ante natal care and delivery,” the expert added.

Nwosisi, however, noted that the declaration the traditional and religious leaders have made  would greatly contribute to increase the uptake of immunisation and birthing services in the health facilities.

“It is very important our pregnant women use the health centres here. That way routine test carried out will help them know if there are complications and maternal and child deaths will be prevented,” he said.

The Director, NOA Lagos, Mr. Waheed Ishola assured the community that the rally would continue. “We are going to embark on a five-day intensive motorised campaign in this LGA like we did during the Ebola outbreak.”

“The campaign is to ensure that our people are well sensitised on the importance of vaccinating their children,” he said.
