The victim
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 30 years old mother, Ayo Sheriff, for burning her 16-year-old daughter’s upper and lower right limbs with hot electric pressing iron.

Mrs. Sheriff, aged 30, was said to have reacted inhumanly after her daughter’s boss reported that she had stolen 500 naira. Stealing, she said, was a disgrace to their family.

According to release the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, issued, the 16 years old (a secondary school student and part-time student nurse in auxiliary capacity) was given 500 naira by her boss.

“The victim was instructed to give someone 200 naira, use 50 naira as transport fare and return the balance of two hundred and fifty to her boss the next day,” Oti said.

The mother and suspect
For failure to bring the change of 250 naira only to her boss when asked, she was reported to her mother. “When her boss asked for the 250 naira, she defaulted, saying the money was with her mother, whom her boss said denied knowledge of it”.

Sadly, when the victim returned home from work, her mother – waiting with a plugged electric iron – burnt her upper and lower limbs. According to the mother, she brought disgrace to the family.

Following the sight of the horrible wounds inflicted on the child by her, the Commissioner of Police Lagos, Imohimi Edgal, urged parents to correct their children in love.

His words: “The rate at which cases of domestic violence is increasing is now  a source of concern to  the Command.”

The Gender Section of the Command, headed by SP Adejoke Cole, has concluded investigation into the case and the suspect has been charged to court.
