Court Denies Rapist Brother-in-Law Bail

The Tibunu Magistrate Court on Wednesday denied Michael Chukwuemeka Chukem,  the brother-in-law who allegedly raped his four nieces and one neighbour in Lagos, bail.

He was arrested and charged to court this week for allegedly having carnal knowledge of his four little nieces and one neighbour’s daughter. The victims are aged: 11, 10, six, five and four. While one is his brother’s daughter, three are his wife’s elder brother’s.

According to Child Protection Network, who was fully on ground to witness the case, when one of the victims (the six years old) saw him, she began to shiver with fear and cried.

“The judge quickly took the children into his chambers for questioning and was apparently convinced that they were not telling lies coupled with the medical report from Mirabel Centre as proof,” CPN representative, Mrs. Mary-Anne, said.

Having read medical report and the confession of the minors, the judge denied the suspect bail.

“Outside the court, Chukem shouted at the little girls, calling them liars; that they would all die. He cursed my colleague, Ore Adebiyi as well. He said we organised girls to tell lies against him. But the prison wardens cautioned him,” she told Healthmundo.

On his part, the alleged serial rapist, who was said to have carried out this abusive act at night while the girls’ parents slept, was generally arrogant and unrepentant even in court. Mary-Anne expressed.

The representative added: “While Chukem’s mum called one of my team members a liar, we took the children into the bus because they were terrified.”

The case has been adjourned to Wednesday May 30 this year.
