Women Associtations including the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FIDA, and NGOs in Ondo State joined the Inter-African Committee (IAC) to sensitise women against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The walk, which began from Akure Town hall meeting to Isinkan market, was in line with the 2020 International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM as observed on February 6th every year.

According to the state Executive Chairman IAC, Dr. Modupe Dairo, told participants that circumcision was meant for male children, as directed by God, adding that FGM does more harm to women than good.

“I implore women to raise their voices against the practice in their localities,” she encouraged.

Speaking also, the FIDA Chairperson, Mrs. Bola Joel, warned that whoever was caught carrying out such harmful traditional practice would face the penalty, a two year jail term.

Her words: “The practice is common among women. Report cases of female circumcision to the police or FIDA.”

The State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs. Doris Olumoko, however, charged female journalists to use their professional skills against any violence act on women.

During her health talk, a mid-wife, Mrs. Olabisi Owolabi said the practice was harmful to the health of female children.

She further described FGM as false alongside all the traditional beliefs attached to the practice, saying there was no genuine reasons for doing it according to research.

With her years of experience, Owolabi decried that the genital cutting can result in VesicoVaginal Fistula (VVF) and other infections for victims.

Other topics tackled were on giving female children adequate sex education and speak against all forms of FGM and mutilation.

The event had in attendance market women led by the Erelu Iyaloja-General of Akure kingdom, Chief Mrs. Adefunmilaye Adekanye, and the Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) among others.
