Managing Director of Bricon Global Consult Limited, Ms. Abigail Simon-Hart, is a breast cancer survivor. She has defeated stigmas, low self-esteem and taken charge of her life after mastectomy. Today, she raises the flag for other survivors to breathe again.

Yes, she is an MD and counsellor despite her daily reality. Yet, she is unfazed by the situation and faces life head on despite removal of her breast.

Hence, Simon-Hart encouraged: “I want breast cancer patients to know that there is no shame in having breast cancer or mastectomy.”

She continued that breast cancer patients should not be afraid of losing their breasts or shy away from seeking medical attention.”

Truly, her mission cuts through Nigeria since 2016. She wants to see every survivor love her body.

Sadly, she revealed that some breast cancer patients preferred death to mastectomy. “Some women prefer to die than remove their breasts".

According to the MD, she had four cases of women like that. "They vehemently refused mastectomy. They died, eventually.”

For this survivor and counsellor in cancer care, there is no shame. “It's all about loving and feeling good about yourself.

"It's also knowing about your body. If you notice anything different, go and get it checked. Don’t be afraid. Early detection is key, however."

While many women are fazed by stigma and shame, Simon-Hart holds firmly the saying that where there is a will, there us life.

She shares a message of hope, restoration and self-confidence with other breast cancer survivors whose voices had been buried in the society.

Meanwhile, prostheses (mastectomy bras), which can serve for about three years, should not be exposed directly to the blazing sun or anything with a sharp point that may puncture it.

“It is important that they care for it properly. The bras are durable. They last on average tow to three years. Although I have been wearing for mine for five years, they are still okay,” she pointed out.
