It has been disclosed at the ongoing International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) holding in Kigali, Rwanda, that Nigerian women have prevented over two million unplanned pregnancies in 2018 through the use of contraceptives.

The report, which is available on the Family Planning 2020 website, showed that through the use of different methods of contraceptives Nigerian women have been able to prevent 2,060,000 pregnancies this year alone. This figure is higher than that of 2017, which is 1,904, 000.

According to the report, despite the increase in the number of Nigerian women using contraceptives this year, 1, 371, 000 unintended pregnancies occurred still.

However, the contraceptive method commonly used in Nigeria is condom, closely followed by injectables and pills.

The conference, which began on Monday November 12, will run till November 15 this year. It is co-hosted by Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
