CPN, Alakara Rescue Teenage Girl from Rapist Brother-in-law in Lagos

Rebecca Ejifoma

The Child Protection Network, Lagos (CPN) and Alakara Homes have rescued 14 years old teenage girl (names withheld) from her elder sister’s husband, Mr. David Edward, 40, who raped her daily and inflicted injuries on her for exposing him.

THISDAY gathered that Edward, who is currently on the run, subjected the primary 5 pupil to sexual abuse daily at their residence at 17 Folarin Street, Empire Surulere, Lagos.

According to the Head of Rescue and Referrals and Coordinator CPN Oshodi-Isolo, Mr. Ebenezer Omejalile, the little girl  was badly beaten by her aunt's husband  because for the first time she refused him to sexually abuse her as usual.

Meanwhile, the perpetrator and father of one, who is currently on the run, was said to have beaten the survivor by inflicting severe injury on her. “He did not stop there he further  lied to the  survivors Aunty who equally inflicted injury on her”, Omejalile added.

He expressed that the teenager was rushed to  Ebute-Meta General  Hospital, where she confided in the nurses. They, in turn, checked her and confirmed she had been severely defiled.

The rescuer said: “The teenager was discharged and sent back to the same home where she was constantly abused.”

On receiving the report, two female police officers – Mrs. Stella and Mrs. Alli (the IPO) alongside CPN Mrs. Oluwatoyin Ojejinmi and this reporter visited the resident at Surulere on July 27 to rescue the survivor.

Although the teenage girl was said to have gone on an errand while the husband went to work, his pregnant wife – Mrs. Deborah Edward said: “My husband is not home.  Coco (survivor’s nickname) wants to kill me”.

Despite the officers' instructions to come with the survivor and her rapist husband to Alakara the next day July 28 by 12pm, Edward chose to elope.

Ojejinme said: “At the Ebute-Meta General Hospital, the nurses confirmed the girl was defiled severally. That made them insult the wife, who confronted the husband before he took to his heels”.

Confirming the rescue, she said: “I was with her yesterday. The girl was always fetching water about 30 times daily. She is at Alakara Homes now. She neither wishes to go back  home nor to her parents in the village – in Cross River”.

The primary 5 pupil has pleaded to continue with her education. “If I go to the village, my parents won’t be able to send me to school”. “The IPO of Alakara home is in-charge of the case”.

When Healthmundo contacted the Lagos State Police Spokesman, CSP Chike Oti, he said the case was yet to get to the Police Headquarters but promised to confirm. “I will get back to you on this case”.
