Breasts’ Cancer Survivors: Regaining Lost Confidence with Silicon Breast Form, Mastectomy Bras in Nigeria

With the arrival of silicon breast forms and post mastectomy bras in Nigeria, dashed hopes have been restored. Rebecca Ejifoma chronicles the sordid experience of a survivor, who had been yearning for silicon form bras since 1993 among others

One of the challenges crippling the femininity and confidence of breast cancer survivors is living without their breasts after mastectomy. Today, however, all that has been swept by the influx of silicon breast forms and mastectomy bras for their reliefs.

Mrs. Hamzat E (not real names), a middle age woman, could not contain her elation. Even the expo hall echoed her deep sigh of relief as she drooled over the silicon breast forms and mastectomy bras displayed at the Yaba office on Hughes Avenue.

The breast cancer survivor was one of the many women present for a feel and purchase. It was her first time of getting the silicon breast forms and mastectomy bras 26 years after having surgical removal of her breast.

“I had searched for the silicon breast forms and the mastectomy bras after I had mastectomy in 1993 in Nigeria but futile until now that I’ve been able to get one,” she said.

Having thankfully got a pair for herself, the middle age woman recounted how her friend went for reconstruction after the removal of both breasts. “My friend went for plastic surgery at the cost of N4 million. She was not aware of this special brassier”.

According to Hamzat, her friend has heard of the bras and forms in Nigeria. And she wished she never reconstructed.

While recommending the silicon breast forms to other survivors out there, the audacious survivor lauded the product as a welcome means to rejuvenate their dashed self-esteem.

Indeed, it is all thanks to Bricon Global Consult Ltd in partnership with Nicola Jane UK and Truelife Breastcare of Dublin Ireland that these women’s hopes have been raised and kept alive. Today, these silicon breast forms and mastectomy bras are made available at affordable prices to women in need of them.

Bemoaning that most survivors, who could not access these products were prone to stigmatisation, which could lead to psychological problems, Hamzat lent her voice.

Her words: “Accessing these brassieres in Nigeria have been a serious challenge for most of us. We want governments at all levels and philanthropists to create platforms where we can easily get them.”

Speaking, the Managing Director of Bricon Global Consult Ltd, Ms Abigail Simon-Hart, noted that the breast care expo was to resuscitate the confidence of breast cancer survivors as well as restore normalcy in their lives while counselling them.

She said: “For a woman, normalcy is getting rest back. Some women do reconstruction. But how many people can afford it? One of the buyers, who came today, said she regretted doing reconstruction upon seeing these. That it cost her a whooping 4million naira.”

The Bricon boss and breast cancer survivor expressed that the exhibition and subsidised sale of the mastectomy brassieres followed her observation of difficulties most cancer survivors faced in accessing the product in Nigeria.
