Foundation Calls for Training, Supervision of Volunteers in Health Sector

With the launch of Volunteer Safe Project, George Kerry and Be in Health Foundations have called on the Nigerian Medical Association, the Federal Ministry of Health and all state ministries of health to develop training and supervision strategy for volunteers in the humanitarian sector in order for Nigerians to enjoy better health services.


The Founder of George Kerry Life Foundation, Dr. Matilda Kerry alongside her partner and founder of Be in Health Foundation, Ijeoma Ugwudi, said this during the launch of Volunteer Safe Project in Lagos, an initiative of both foundations.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised alarm over the sordid rate of stunted growth among children of under-five in the country as statistic shows that over 17 million are affected while over 1.5 million children under five years in the South-West and Edo state have stunted growth.

This was disclosed at a two-day Media Dialogue on Child Nutrition with the theme, ‘South-west Nigeria' holding today February 27 to 28 organised by the Ogun Ministry of Information and Strategy in collaboration with UNICEF on Tuesday in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Mandela Washington Fellow Sparks Collaboration Between Artists and Healthcare Professionals

A 2015 Mandela Washington Fellow, Mr. Kunle Adewale, on Sunday inaugurated an Art in Medicine Fellowship for public health practitioners and professional artists in Lagos.

Eighty five (85) medical professionals including doctors, nurses, and trained caregivers as well as fifteen (15) visual artists were inducted into the yearlong fellowship.

The 100 inductees will hold a series of creative art engagements such as painting, drawing and collaging for children and young adults living with sickle cell anemia, cancer, and mental health conditions.

Obaseki Calls for Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation

The Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has called for intercontinental partnership to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation where it is still practised in the state.

Obaseki made this clarion call in Benin City during the commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation marked on February 6 annually.

Lassa Fever: Edo Govt Reactivates Rapid Response Team, Traces Contacts of Reported Cases

In a proactive measure to curtail the spread of Lassa Fever in the state, the Edo State Government has reactivated its rapid response team and started contact tracing for confirmed cases of the disease.

The state government, also, said it was working closely with the Lassa Fever Institute, Irrua and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for case management and disease surveillance.

ERA/FoEN Petitions Buhari on Right to Water in Nigerian Constitution

The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has written the President, Muhammed Buhari, on the need to enshrine water as a human right in the Nigerian Constitution.

ERA/FoEN is asking President Buhari to throw his weight behind demands by civil society and other groups for democratically-controlled water systems that guarantee universal access to all Nigerians irrespective of their status.

Civil Societies Call for Ban of Shisha Smoking, Tobacco Control Enforcement

A group of civil societies in Lagos, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN),  have called on government at all levels and relevant agencies to the urgent need to ban shisha smoking in Nigeria as well as enforce tobacco control law.

The Organisations made this clarion call at a media parley in Lagos yesterday when it stated its dissatisfaction over the rate of Nigerians, especially artistes in the music, movie industries and shisha bars are patronising this health danger across the country.
